Greenville High School students showcased their academic talent and competitive spirit this season through Academic UIL, earning top finishes at the district level and advancing to regional competition.
Academic UIL challenges students to compete in a variety of events that test knowledge, critical thinking, and real-time performance. From writing and spelling to mathematics and science, students prepare to compete against peers from across the region in a structured and competitive environment.
This year, Greenville High School seniors Mia Wilcock, Damien Tennison, and Sophia Kailukaitis represented the district in multiple events, earning recognition for their performances at the district meet.
Sophia Kailukaitis earned fifth place in Ready Writing, an event that requires students to respond to a prompt within a limited time frame, demonstrating creativity, organization, and strong writing skills.
In spelling, both Mia Wilcock and Damien Tennison earned top finishes at the district level, placing fifth and third, respectively. Tennisonβs third-place finish also earned a spot at the regional competition, where the student competed against top qualifiers from across the region.
In addition to these events, Greenville High School students also competed in other Academic UIL categories this season, including mathematics, science, and calculator applications, contributing to a growing presence on campus.
Under the guidance of UIL coach Ms. Karon Jones and campus UIL director Amber Davis, students dedicated time outside of the school day to prepare for competition, often meeting in the mornings to sharpen their skills and build confidence.
Jones said she was proud of the way students embraced the opportunity and committed themselves throughout the season.
βWe had students show up, put in the time, and really take advantage of the opportunity to compete,β Jones said. βAt the end of the day, itβs about giving your best effort, and they did exactly that.β
As the Academic UIL program continues to expand, Greenville High School remains focused on creating opportunities for students to challenge themselves and succeed beyond the classroom.
